You may be familiar with the Samuel Johnson quote “when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life,” but the capital’s star was fleetingly dimmed in 2020, as residents toyed with the idea of escaping to the countryside.
The mass exodus, however, never really took hold and while some did sell up for rural enclaves, there has actually been a more subtle reshuffling within the city. Analysis of London’s sales transactions since the start of our very first lockdown in March 2020 revealed a number of postcodes with perennial appeal, with South West London more than holding its own.
In fact, SW18 and SW11 in Wandsworth ranked as the third and fourth busiest for sales overall, while SW6 in Hammersmith and Fulham, SW19, SW16 and SW17 all appeared in the top 10. Interestingly, activity has been most concentrated in areas that straddle inner and outer London, illustrating how home movers are ready to extrapolate themselves from the very centre of the city but are not ready to quit the capital altogether.
Now, as we successfully follow the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown and our favourite hospitality venues welcome us back, Aspire predicts South West London’s blend of green open spaces, restaurant-packed High Streets and connections to the West End will prove an intoxicating mix for those looking for London equilibrium this year.
