Tooting’s terrific little brother, Furzedown, it a mini neighbourhood not to be missed, says the branch’s Sandra Murray.
“Furzedown isn’t a name that springs to mind when thinking about SW London but it’s a little corner of Tooting with a big heart. Our most famous resident is Mayor of London, who was also MP for Tooting for 11 years – he definitely loves where he lives!
As well as political movers and shakers, families flock to Furzedown to be close to the three excellent primary schools – Graveney, Penwortham and Furzedown – which feed in to some excellent secondary and public schools.
With busy parents and members of parliament to feed, it’s no surprise there’s ample places to reconnect and refuel. Tooting’s Broadway Market is a hive of food and drink activity, and our personal favourites include the Sea Garden Grill and Unwined – the wine bar and pop-up restaurant. The Castle pub is the place for big plates and roast dinners, and for small bites or sharing platters, both The Little Taparia and Mezza are hard to beat.
If we were to describe our perfect weekend in Furzedown, it would include a mooch in the Sprout Arts Gallery, brunch at Cut the Mustard Café (not forgetting an amazing take-out sourdough boule), followed by a stroll around Figge's Marsh and a handmade pizza from Naked Loaf. Of course, if we’re feeling brave, we’ll take a dip in Tooting Bec Lido - the largest open air, fresh water swimming pool by surface area in the UK.
